Project CWSISP Under CWASA

Chittagong Water Supply Improvement and Sanitation Project (CWSISP)

Chittagong Water Supply & Sewerage Authority (CWASA) is implementing the Chittagong Water Supply Improvement and Sanitation Project (CWSISP) with funding support from the World Bank. The CWSISP targets infrastructure investments for increasing production of safe water by the CWASA, coupled with the rehabilitation and expansion of its water distribution network to increase access to safe water within its service area. The project will also support comprehensive institutional development of CWASA to modernize its facilities and improve its efficiency. In parallel, the clarification of institutional mandates for sewerage and drainage in Chittagong, and identification and design of priority investments will be supported. The development objective of the project is to increase the sustainable access to safe water and improved sanitation, as well as support the establishment of a longer term water supply, sanitation and drainage capital development and development of an operational management program in Chittagong.

This project deals with the construction of Priority Water Supply Network in Chittagong. These pipelines include the so-called “No-Regret Investments” (NR-investment) and the construction of a Transmission line from ModugnaghatWater Treatment Plant to Kalurghat inside the city of Chittagong.

This contract package, CWSISP/W-8 includes the construction of theNR investments in addition to replacement of a number of existing lines, which are in poor condition (often constructed in Asbestos – Cement).

The purpose of the “No Regret” investments are to improve the Chittagong Water Supply Network in order to distribute the water from the new water treatment plants (Kharnaphuli 1 and Kharnaphuli 2 and Modugnaghat which are presently under construction) in a controlled manner. This includes the creating of 10 isolated sections and the reinforcement of a number of primary distribution lines throughout the system.

The purpose of the Transmission line from Modugnaghat to Kalurghat is to bring water from the Modugnaghat Treatment Plant (being constructed with World Bank funding) to central Chittagong and ultimately to Patenga Booster station.

This contract package, CWSISP/W-8 includes the construction of the NR investments in addition to replacement of a number of existing lines, the Construction of Distribution Pipeline works in Section-1: NR-2, NR-2a, NR-2b Section-2: NR-4, NR-22, NR25, NR-21 Section-3: NR-5, NR-19 Section-4: NR-8, NR-7, NR-6, NR-23 Section-5: NR-3, CWASA-3, NR-24, NR-20 Section-6: NR-09, NR-12, NR-10, NR-26, NR-11 Section-7: NR-28, NR-15, NR-16, CWASA-4, NR-13, NR-27 Section-8: NR-29, NR-14, CWASA-1, CWASA-2 UNDER CWASA.
